Glendale Tech on Tap: The Anatomy of Fake News

Fake news has spread like wildfire across the internet. Amplified by social media and web sharing, this rise of misinformation is a troubling development in an online world where virtually anyone can create their own headlines. Fake news can be benign and made to entertain, but malicious and targeted fake news can derail organizations large and small.

Glendale Tech on Tap will be tackling this growing problem at its next meetup this Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 5 – 7 pm at The Moose Den.

Wednesday night’s speaker will be the City of Glendale’s Director of Communications and Community Relations Tom Lorenz. Tom has served the City of Glendale for 32 years, 30 of which as a police officer with the Glendale Police Department. In January 2011, while serving as Adjutant to the Chief of Police, he was moved into a dual role as the Public Information Officer for the City of Glendale. In 2014, Tom was appointed Director of Communications and Community Relations for the entire city. Tom oversees the City’s community outreach through the Creative Media and Digital Innovation section that include the award-winning GTV6, winner of seven Emmy’s. Through collaborative efforts, Tom and his staff have moved toward greater community partnerships and civic engagement through increased information accessibility, events, and digital presence across many platforms.

Tom’s extensive experience with social media, media engagement, and communications makes him uniquely designed to tackle this new world of fake news. He will present not only on its rise and proliferation, but also how your business can develop countermeasures and stop fake news in its tracks.

The event will feature light happy hour snacks, a no host bar, brief presentation, and a long reception for a chance to meet and connect. The 30 minute talk will begin at 5:30 pm.

Wednesday night’s engaging discussion is just one part in Glendale’s Tech on Tap series, sponsored by the City of Glendale Economic Development Division. The series is a monthly meet-up where techies, marketers, investors, and entrepreneurs discuss the latest technological and entrepreneurial innovations in a social and open environment. The goal of these meetup is to strengthen the technology and startup environment in Glendale with fun and interesting forums for networking and connecting.
