The Central Library renovation is an 18-month project that will provide building improvements that enhance the function of the facility as a twenty-first century library.

When the Project is finished:

• Visitors will be assisted through a single service point and enjoy increased study and community spaces, additional exhibition spaces, improved access to technology, and better accommodation of collections and services.

• Relocated entrances to the north and south will further establish Central Library as an anchor to the City’s Arts & Entertainment District and give more visibility to the civic presence in the downtown.

• A Maker Space and a room dedicated to Man’s Inhumanity to Man.

Although Central Library is not currently designated as historic the design approach to the renovation preserves the City’s ability to list the building in the future in recognition of its style and the significance of the architect. The eighteen-month project will be phased so that closures can be avoided. However, service hours may need to be adjusted and some parts of the collection will be unavailable at various times.

Gruen Associates was also responsible for the Brand Library & Art Center renovation, projects for the Shatford Library at Pasadena City College, Union Station, Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Hollywood Bowl, among others.
