Walt Disney Animation Studios, one of the industry’s premier cinematic hubs, recently announced the title and release date of its 56th animated feature film, Moana. Set roughly 2,000 years ago, it chronicles the adventures of its eponymous protagonist and the demi-god Maui as they embark on a perilous seafaring journey to fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. It’ll be sailing into theaters November 23rd, 2016.

Helming the film will be veteran Disney directing duo John Musker and Ron Clements, whose previous directorial credits include Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Princess and the Frog. The titular character will be voiced by Hawaiian native and industry newcomer Auli'i Cravalho, while renowned action star Dwayne Johnson will be lending his vocal abilities to Maui. Moana will reportedly be a traditional musical adventure.
The Glendale, CA-based animation studio has enjoyed immense critical and box office success recently with films such as Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, and Big Hero 6. Its upcoming film Zootopia will be hitting theaters March 4th, 2016.
