Update:
Public Works recently released a video highlighting Sophia's Upcycled Holiday Craft Contest winning entry.
In the spirit of the holidays and promoting creative reuse, the City of Glendale’s Public Works department recently hosted its inaugural Upcycled Holiday Craft Contest. It was geared towards Glendale students crafting pieces of holiday art utilizing reusable materials and submitting them online via social media. Balboa Elementary School first grader Sophia Zadoorian ended up taking home top honors with her paper ornament angel.
According to contest rules, 90% of each creative entry must consist of reused materials such as plastic bottles, candy wrappers, and bottle caps. Upcycling is the process of transforming materials that would have otherwise been thrown away or recycled into something useful and beautiful.
Sophia’s angel was comprised of the following materials:
Body - empty water bottle
Dress - old holiday wrapping paper
Wings and shoes - old holiday decoration
Head - reused construction paper
Scarf - old hair ribbon
Arms and dress décor - flowers and twigs from backyard
City of Glendale Director of Communications & Community Relations Tom Lorenz stated the contest’s purpose was to both raise awareness and promote the financial benefits associated with upcycling.
“One was to educate the public on recycling, an understanding that one’s trash is another’s treasure,” he said. “The other is about creating decorations without having to spend an extraordinary amount of money.”
Sophia will receive a $25 Target gift card along with various City of Glendale items. Additionally, she and her angel will be featured in various city publications along with GTV6.
