City of Glendale hosts America Recycles Day Open House

Glendale may have already celebrated America Recycles Day last Saturday, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of opportunities to learn about recycling and our community. The Glendale Recycling Center was excited to host 250 second and third graders from local schools for an open house to learn about concepts such as recycling, composting, and how to incorporate those concepts in their day-to-day lives.

Local students were treated to a day chock full of engaging activities and lessons on the importance of recycling and keeping the community clean. Students learned about “upcycling”, the process of reusing discarded materials to create something valuable or new, such as making bird feeders using plastic water bottles. There was also a recycling relay to separate trash and recyclables into the right container, special workshops on composting, and a tour of the City’s recycling center. Additionally, the students had the chance to enter for a chance to win a bike by guessing the amount of cans contained in a large bail of crushed soda cans on its way to being recycled. If the games and lessons weren’t fun enough, each child left with a goodie-bag to remind themselves of their day at the Recycling Center.

America Recycles Day is an annual event sponsored by Keep America Beautiful. Using local events such as this one, America Recycles Day hopes to inspire Americans to recycle at work, home, and on-the-go. Glendale hosted its very own America Recycles Day on Saturday, November 12th. The event was a huge success and brought kids and families together for a free screening of Wall-E and various activities that taught some important recycling skills.
