Crime is always a reality, no matter where you live. One of the most prevalent crimes in US cities are property crimes. Property Crimes are defined as the taking of money or property without the threat or use of force. This offense includes vehicle theft, burglary, larceny-theft, and arson. According to the FBI’s 2015 Crime in the United States report, there are approximately 7.9 million reported property crimes every year. Those same property crimes cost people approximately $14.3 billion in losses. Residents of Glendale can be glad then that they live in one of the cities with the lowest property crime out here in the Pacific region.
According to Safeco Insurance’s ranking of the lowest property crime rates in midsize Pacific cities, Glendale ranked as 7th next to cities such as Irvine, Norwalk, and Thousand Oaks. Safeco looked at multiple factors in deciding its ranking, including population and the unweighted average of burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle thefts per 100,000 population. Information was compiled from the 2015 FBI Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report. Each midsize city in California, 100,000-500,000 residents, was then ranked based on an average overall property crime score. The Pacific Region includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The average score for the entire Pacific Region was 491.68.
Eight of the safest cities in terms of property crimes are located in California, while two were in Arizona. Glendale’s overall average property crime score was 286 compared to the Pacific region’s average of 491. Glendale’s full scores can be seen below.
Glendale’s ranking was in no doubt in part due to the active effort of the Glendale Police Department and the local community to combat and report property crimes as they happen. Consider investing in a home security system. Oftentimes, a sign in front of your house is enough to deter a would-be burglar.
Never allow strangers into your home.
Lock all doors and windows when you leave your home.
Secure valuable possessions in a locked safe.
Always be vigilant whether you are out and about or at home.
