This Tuesday, December 6th, the Verdugo Fire Communications Center will be announcing the launch of a new app that could save your life in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The PulsePoint mobile app enables citizen bystanders to provide lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and find a publically accessible automated external defibrillator (AED).
The Verdugo Fire Communications Center serves as a regional dispatch center for the communities of Alhambra, Arcadia, Burbank, Glendale, Monrovia, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, San Marino, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, Vernon, and the Burbank Airport. By launching the application in all 14 jurisdictions, the Verdugo Fire Communications Center hopes to improve the sudden cardiac arrest survival rates and give bystanders the tools to assist those in need. The application provides information on how to perform CPR, gives the location of publically accessible AED machines, and shows the locations of nearby medical emergencies.
Sudden cardiac arrests are the leading cause of death in the United States, and account for an estimated 325,000 deaths each year or 1,000 deaths per day. According to the American Heart Association, effective bystander CPR administered immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. However, due to the lack of knowledge of where emergencies are happening and publically accessible AEDs, many do not receive such important care. The launch of PulsePoint gives citizens the tools and resources to make a difference for someone in need.
