Commission on the Status of Women and Soroptimist International Glendale Hosts Human Trafficking Awareness Film Screening

January 19, 2017

According to the U.S. State Department and the non-profit Guardian Group, 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every single year. Of those that are trafficked, 80% are women and half are children. The numbers are shocking. In the U.S. especially, we seem to forget that human trafficking occurs daily. This Friday, the City of Glendale’s Commission on the Status of Women and Soroptimist International of Glendale will shed light on this deadly and exploitative crime with a free screening of the film SOLD.

SOLD tells the true story of a 13 year-old girl from Nepal who was sold to a brothel in India. The extraordinary tale of her brutal experiences and her quest for freedom highlight the situations of millions of children around the globe every year. The film is based on the global bestseller by Patricia McCormik, and is directed by Academy Award winning Director Jeffrey D. Brown and Academy Award Winning Executive Producer Emma Thompson. Winning various awards on the film festival circuit, SOLD presents a haunting, yet important look, at the horrors of human trafficking.

The screening will begin at 7:00 pm this Friday, January 20, 2017 at the Brand Library Recital Hall, located at 1601 W. Mountain Street here in Glendale. Guests are welcome to attend a wine and cheese reception prior to the screening at 6:00 pm.

Entry to the event is free, but donations are encouraged, as 100% of all funds collected from the screening will go to the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST). CAST is an organization specific to Los Angeles which fights human trafficking in the region.
