Since its launch in early November, the Be Street Smart Glendale campaign has been in full swing. This citywide effort has been reaching out to all sectors, including children and senior citizens, who are disproportionately affected by pedestrian accidents in the community. The campaign, under the leadership of the City’s Community Development Department, will continue to engage those who walk, drive and bike in Glendale through a variety of approaches including advertising, in-school education programs, community events and social media.
The campaign has also challenged residents to collectively walk a billion steps. The Billion Step Challenge is an important part of the Be Street Smart Glendale campaign to empower residents to get outside and become personally responsible for their own safety and the safety of others when walking, driving, or biking in Glendale. If a billion steps sounds like a lot, that's because it is. Taking one billion steps would be enough to go around the Earth and to the Moon and back, but thankfully you aren't alone. The entire community has been getting in on the act and has been encouraging friends, families, community organizations, and local businesses to put on those walking shoes and get active.

The campaign is a part of a larger Citywide pedestrian safety program to raise awareness about safety issues involving bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists in Glendale. In 2014, the City of Glendale received $2.7 million in bicycle and pedestrian safety grants to fund educational projects around the city.
