Community Invited to Donate a Tree in Celebration of Arbor Day

The City of Glendale’s Community Services & Parks Department, in partnership with Glendale Beautiful, is set to participate in the annual observance of Arbor Day on March 7th. This yearly event is a time for the community to come together and celebrate the diverse array of trees and natural beauty here in the City of Glendale.

Arbor Day got its start back in 1872 when J. Sterling Morton proposed a special holiday celebrating the planting of new trees. Early on, Morton saw the importance of planting trees to prevent loss of forestry and to beautify local communities. He hoped that by engaging with neighborhoods and civic organizations people could come together and plant trees to make a difference. This holiday became known as Arbor Day, and this unique observance eventually became an official holiday across the nation. The holiday was initially celebrated in the last days of April, but due to different planting seasons in different parts of the country, some states such as California celebrate Arbor Day in March. California’s Arbor Week celebrations will take place on March 7th and continue all week until March 14th in honor of the famed horticulturist Luther Burbank.

The City of Glendale’s Community Services & Parks Department and Glendale Beautiful are partnering up to celebrate Glendale’s natural diversity of trees and further beautify our community. You can help us plant more trees by donating one. There is no better tribute to the ones you love and appreciate more than a donation of a tree in their honor. Not only are trees long-lasting monuments to the special people in our lives, but your donation will help to keep Glendale green and beautiful.

You can donate a tree by visiting www.glendalebeautiful.org/donate-a-tree. The deadline to donate a tree is February 28, 2017.

A brief ceremony will be held at Casa Adobe de San Rafael on March 7th during which donors meeting the deadline will be presented with a certificate. Coffee and socializing will begin at 10 am with the full program starting at 10:30 am.
