Three lucky students from Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale Unified School District will soon have their artistic creations proudly displayed on the Hollywood Burbank Airport terminal tower. 2017 marks the tenth year that the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority has sponsored the Tower Banner Student Art Contest for 9-12th graders. Out of 183 entries, three winners were selected. Their artwork will be enlarged to 16 feet by 26 feet and put on display for a three-month period starting in June 2017.
Each year, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority chooses a different aviation theme for the contest. This year’s theme was, “Aviation Goes to Hollywood” in order to celebrate the Airport’s name change to the Hollywood Burbank Airport. Out of 183 entries across all three districts, only 9 were passed to each city’s respective Arts and Culture Commission which then selected the winner from each school district based on criteria from the Airport Authority.
The first banner to be displayed this June was the winning banner from the Glendale Unified School District created by 11th grader Jennifer Bae from Crescenta Valley High School.
The winning banner from Pasadena High School was created by 11th grader Ixchél Cueto-González. Pasadena Unified School District’s entry will be displayed beginning January 2018.
Burbank Unified School District’s winning banner was created by 12th grader Anthony Sutanto of Burbank High School, and will be displayed starting April 2018.
All first, second, and third place winners from each of the school districts will be on display in the Airport’s Terminal B, so don’t worry about missing out on any of the great works submitted for the contest. High school students shouldn’t be sad if they missed this unique opportunity, because the contest is scheduled to begin again in September 2017. All you have to do is be enrolled in Grades 9-12 in public high schools from Burbank Unified School District, Glendale Unified School District, or the Pasadena Unified School District.
