Central Library Re-Opening May 1st

Since September of 2016, the Glendale Central Library has been closed to the public so that crews could move into high gear putting the finishing touches on the library’s exciting additions. But the wait is finally over and on May 1stthe public is invited to celebrate! Join the City of Glendale’s Library, Arts, & Culture department for an activity packed day to usher in the re imagined Central Library.

The event starts at 9:30 am with entertainment on the outdoor plaza followed by the official Grand Re-Opening ceremony at 10:30 am. With the official start, comes all the fun. Bring family and friends and explore all the exciting new spaces and events which the Central Library will offer. Join in on a workshop on how to create jewelry, a book-bag, or a Tibetan Prayer Flag in the new MakerSpace. See a demonstration of the state-of-the-art audio production studio. Sit-in on a powerful and moving talk in the Remembrance Room, where the first exhibition will explore the Armenian Genocide through the eyes of survivors, witnesses and artists and introduce the remarkable iwitness installation in adjacent Central Park. Meet over 20 local authors in the newly renovated auditorium and enjoy a dramatic reading by actors from Antaeus at the top of the grand staircase. For the younger audience members, enjoy a ribbon cutting ceremony, a Bubblemania show, and kite-crafting in the Children’s Room.

The newly renovated library will be a public facility like no other in the region. The library will feature state-of-the-art technology to access information, explore your creativity, and provide collaborative environments for the creation of new content. The facility won’t be just about accessing an extensive array of books, documents, and digital sources, but about giving the community tools to explore. People will be able to come to the library to write and record a song, sew a complicated garment, develop a new color scheme, fabricate a product prototype, or bring their 2D artwork into the animated world. The Central Library will not only provide the tools to explore your creativity, but also spaces for artistic expression, collaboration, deep reflection, and of course, quiet places to sit and enjoy a good book.

The festivities begin Monday, May 1st so be sure to get there bright and early at 9:30 am for entertainment on the plaza, tours, and much more. Show your Glendale library card for a free ride to the Central Library on the Glendale Beeline May 1st.
