The popular CicLAvia open streets event that has taken LA by storm has a new stop; Glendale! For the first time ever, Glendale meets Atwater Village in a 3 mile car-free route from North Brand, Central, and all the way to Atwater Village. The route will be closed to all car traffic from 9 am until 4 pm so that cyclists, pedestrians, runners, and skaters can explore their own neighborhoods in new and interesting ways. The fun starts on June 11th and lasts from 9 am until 4 pm. CicLAvia is free and open to everyone, so bring your family and friends and explore Glendale like never before.
In car-jammed Southern California, it can be hard to imagine our streets filled with bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, and pedestrians, but CicLAvia does just that by creating car-free open spaces to get out and move. This route will give Glendale residents and visitors the opportunity to engage with one another and our neighboring community as they self-propel through the streets alongside entertainment and vendors. The event is free, and you may enter and exit the route from any point along it. Since the event is not a race, and can be entered from any point along the route, you can do as little or as much as you want.
The CicLAvia event is in line with the City’s many initiatives to encourage an active lifestyle and alternate modes of transportation, including the Be Street Smart Campaign. The City of Glendale, working in partnership with the City of Los Angeles and CicLAVia, applied for and was awarded a $179,520 grant from the Metro Board of Directors to help fund an Open Streets event. “Open Streets” are events which temporarily close the streets to vehicles and instead, allow them to remain open for the public to walk, bike, skate or push a stroller in a car-free environment. The grant award was part of a competitive grant application process Metro developed to allocate up to $2 million annually for open streets events in Los Angeles County. The goals of the program encourage sustainable modes of transportation (biking, walking and transit), and provide an opportunity for civic engagement that supports the development of multi-modal policies in cities
The first ever Glendale to Atwater CicLAvia is being produced in partnership with the City of Glendale, City of Los Angeles, Metro, and CicLAvia, Inc.
