A social worker is available at library locations to better serve library patrons affected by mental illness, many of whom are homeless. The social worker:
provides direct support to homeless patrons with or without mental illness
conducts walk-throughs at Downtown Central and branch libraries to identify and engage patrons who appear to be in need of homeless and/or mental health services
assists in navigating and connecting patrons in need to area service providers.
educates staff on intervention techniques in working with challenging patron interactions.
Earlier in 2017, the Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Department received a grant through the California State Library Mental Health Initiative. A social worker was hired through the grant to provide mental health services at library locations. Those mental health services are now part of regular services at the Library, Arts & Culture Department.
