...American flags at City of Glendale buildings are being flown at half-staff until Friday, October 6.
In a Presidential proclamation, President Donald Trump ordered “that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, October 6, 2017. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
The City follows these guidelines for flying the America Flag at half-staff:
1. The proper method for flying the American Flag at half-staff is to first briskly raise it to the top of the pole and then slowly lower it to a position halfway between the top and the bottom of the pole. If the flag is not flown at night and is removed at the end of the day, the American Flag should be raised up to the top of the pole for a moment before being lowered and removed.
2. The American Flag is never to be flown at a lower position than other flags flown in the same display. If you have two poles with the American Flag and California Flag on one pole and the City of Glendale flag on the other pole, the following procedure should be followed: The City of Glendale Flag will be lowered to half-staff first. Then the American Flag will be lowered to a position just above the Glendale Flag. To restore the flags to their normal position, the American Flag will be raised up to the top of its pole then the Glendale flag will be raised. At no time will the California and City of Glendale Flags be positioned above the American Flag. For most of our locations, the American Flag and California Flag are flown from the same pole and obviously the American Flag will always be at a higher position than the state flag when flown at half-staff.
