Arrest of Glendale Police Officer by Federal Authorities

Glendale, CA - Today, the United States Attorney’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Homeland Security announced the arrest of John Balian. He has been charged with a violation of 18 United States Code § 1001, knowing and willingly providing false statements/information, and was taken into custody with the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The investigation was handled by the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Attorney’s Office. The Glendale Police Department was not involved in the investigation, however cooperated with federal authorities.

As City of Glendale employees, we are given the fundamental responsibility of protecting the public trust in local government. Glendale Police Officers provide fundamental lifesaving functions that are vital to the well-being of the community. Our citizens depend on them to provide these services in an efficient and consistent manner, while demonstrating the highest standards of moral and ethical conduct.

"The allegations, in and of themselves, do not represent the values of the Glendale Police Department or our community,” said Chief Povilaitis. “They also don’t represent the values that our officers display every day in providing service to our community, and their integrity that truly defines the Glendale Police Department."

We understand the investigation is ongoing. For more information, you may see the United States Attorney press release here. View the Criminal Complaint here.
