City Elections
In response to a state law intended to increase voter participation, the Glendale City Council changed its citywide election schedule from odd-numbered years to even-numbered years.
The April 2019 election has been moved to coincide with the state primary date in 2020. The 2021 election has been moved to 2022. This will extend the terms of elected officials who were elected in 2015 and 2017 by 11 months.
Safe Routes to School Improvements
Council members approved the fifth phase of the Safe Routes to School Project, which has benefited over 20 Glendale schools since the first project started in 2012.
This new project will benefit the Hoover High School, Toll Middle School, Keppel Elementary School, Theodore Roosevelt Middle School, Horace Mann Elementary School, John Muir Elementary School, and Glendale Community College Garfield Campus.
It will include selective removal and replacement of damaged sidewalks, driveways, pads, and curbs and gutters; selective removal and replacement of deteriorated asphalt pavement; constructing or modifying curb ramps to meet ADA guidelines, tree planting, and more.
Construction is scheduled to take place between June and September 2018, and will cost approximately $1.25 million.
Replacement of Playground Equipment with Grant Funds
A $154,299.55 grant was accepted by the council to be used for the replacement of playground equipment at Carr Park and Nibley Park. The City was awarded the grant, which promotes the “State-Wide Healthy Play Initiative,” in September.
The $678,553.87 replacement project will begin with a plan check and permit process in December, before entering into the demolition and removal phase in January. The new equipment will be installed in February and March.
Appointment of Interim City Manager
Council unanimously approved the appointment of Assistant City Manager Yasmin Beers to the position of Interim City Manager. Beers begins her new role on November 18.
