Glendale City Council Partner with Metrolink to Promote Rail Safety at Doran Crossing

September 27, 2017

On Tuesday, September 26, officials gathered at a Glendale railroad crossing to raise public awareness and promote September as Rail Safety Month. Using the tracks parallel to San Fernando Road as a backdrop, the team stressed the importance of motorist and pedestrian rail safety, and reaffirmed their commitment to safe crossings.

Mayor Vartan Gharpetian stated "Glendale’s number one priority is the safety of our community. My colleagues and I are committed to working with our rail partners to continue the improvement of crossings and encourage safe behavior near tracks to reduce rail-related incidents.”

September was designated Rail Safety Month by the State of California in 2009, with the goal of decreasing rail-related incidents. Since before that time, Glendale’s City Council has focused on improving rail safety; And, thanks to continuous work by Glendale’s own Public Works Department, collaboration with rail authorities, and partnership with neighborhoods, Glendale has and will continue to make safety enhancements to all grade crossings.

“In my dual role as Glendale City Councilmember and 2nd Vice Chair of Metrolink, I’m pleased to be able to ensure with my colleagues, that all railroad crossings in Glendale meet the highest safety standards,” said Ara Najarian.

One of the crossings highlighted for improvements is at the intersection Doran and San Fernando Road – the very location chosen for Tuesday’s event. In fact, Metro is hosting two community meetings to discuss the proposed changes to the crossing on Wednesday, October 4th. The Broadway Street and San Fernando Road rail crossing will also be discussed. To learn more about the proposed upgrades and community meetings, click here.
