Glendale Memorial Day Ceremony May 28

May 21, 2018

Every year, Glendale honors and pays tribute to the veterans who served the United States with courage, pride, and dedication – many paying the ultimate price for peace and freedom.

This year, the Glendale community again assembles at the Veterans Memorial at Glendale City Hall on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 at 9:30 a.m. for a ceremony organized by the Glendale Veterans Coalition.

Brigadier General Ruth A. Wong, United States Air Force (Ret.), is this year’s keynote speaker. She was appointed Director of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (MVA) for Los Angeles County in 2013.

Prior to her appointment, she served one year as the acting director of the MVA, and 10 years as the quality improvement manager for the County Department of Mental Health.

General Wong completed a distinguished career in the United States Air Force in 2001. She served as an assistant to the Air Force Surgeon General for Medical Readiness and Nursing Services, and served as an aeromedical evacuation flight commander in the Persian Gulf during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Glendale Police Chief Carl Povilaitis will emcee the ceremony, which will also include remarks by Glendale Mayor Zareh Sinanyan, an invocation by U.S. Army Chaplain Randy McConnell, flag salute by Glendale resident and veteran Randall Wolff, U.S. Navy (Ret.), National Anthem and musical selection by Victoria Hilferty, and a POW/MIA presentation by Lt. Col. David J. Worley, U.S. Air Force (Ret.).

The California Honor Guard, California Army National Guard, and Glendale Police Explorers will part take in the presentation of colors, honor guard, and laying of the roses, respectively.
