Summer Solstice officially kicked off summer on June 21! Enjoy the season with a variety of activities you can experience in your home city. Fill your warm summer weekend with these exciting events!

Friday, June 22: Brand Library Concert Series 7:00 p.m.

Brand Library

Armenian Ensemble: This quintet was formed in 2017 by young musicians in Los Angeles. Playing folk instruments characteristic of the region, the ensemble is committed to preserving a performance practice informed by the rich musical traditions local to Armenia and its surrounding cultures. The program will consist of Armenian folk, minstrel (ashugh) and sacred music, as well as Persian classical music.

Saturday, June 23: Summer of Soccer Viewing Party 10:30 a.m.

Maryland Paseo

Get your friends together and watch Germany and Sweden battle it out! Feel like you’re part of the action with our 8.5 by 15 LED Screen will immerse you into the stadium. Join the roaring crowd all while enjoying free snacks and giveaways! Got kids? No worries, the family-friendly environment will also include children’s crafts and activities provided by City of Glendale Library, Arts and Culture.

Saturday, June 23: Film Screening- Citizen Tanouye & Witness: American Heroes 2:00- 4:00 p.m.

Downtown Central Library

Citizen Tanouye uniquely brings history to life for eight ethnically diverse Torrance, CA high school students through their research of THS alumnus Tech Sgt. Ted T. Tanouye, and the impact the war had on their city, while drawing attention to the civil rights abuses of WWII era America. While serving as a member of the renowned 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Tanouye's family was incarcerated in “Relocation Camps” at Jerome and later Rohwer AR. Ted's action in battle would eventually earn him the Medal of Honor.

Saturday, June 23: Street Food Cinema 5:30 p.m.

Central Park

Enjoy live music, friends, and food trucks with an evening under the stars at Street Food Cinema. This week, Glendale Central Park will be hosting a screening of The Goonies. Check online for tickets and more information!

Sunday, June 24: LA Dodgers History: A Conversation with Rich Kee & Fred Claire 2:00 p.m. Downtown Central Library Join us for a special program in Downtown Central Library with Dodger's Photographer Rich Kee and Fred Claire, the team’s former General Manager.

Exhibits:

May 29- July 8: Accused of No Crime: Incarceration of Japanese in America ReflectSpace Gallery ReflectSpace Gallery at Downtown Central exhibit Accused of No Crime: Japanese Incarceration in America examines a massive civil rights violation committed in our own backyard by our own government: the “crimeless” imprisonment by the US government of 120,000 men, women, and children of Japanese ancestry during WWII. The artists in Accused of No Crime reflect on the historical context of the incarceration and consider its impact today. The exhibit weaves a deeply personal narrative of this dark history through art, archive, installation, and documentary film to highlight the stories of interned families and showcase artists who are descendants.

Saturday, June 23: Wildlife Learning Center 2:00–2:45 pm Chevy Chase Library While the World Is Sleeping Based on the book by Pamela Duncan Edwards, this live-animal presentation focuses on nocturnal animals and the adaptations that allow them to thrive at night. Ages 4+.
