Kids of the Future

“Technology is the future.” “Children are our future.” We hear these two phrases a lot, and the truth is, they’re both right. There’s no stopping children when they have a comprehensive knowledge of coding and robotics. And the students at Cerritos Elementary have proven their master-skills! On Thursday January 25, Cerritos Elementary school hosted more than 100 families and community members at their first “Epic Build” Coding Showcase. Students from kindergarten through sixth grade demonstrated their computer coding and robotics skills by creating online computer games, interactive animated stories, and Lego robots designed to follow commands!

This year, Cerritos partnered with Code to the Future, a leading Computer Science program for magnet and theme-based schools. Through this partnership, students were able to learn the fundamentals of computer coding as part of their daily curriculum.

In November, the GUSD Board of Education voted to transform Cerritos Elementary into a magnet school, dubbing it Cerritos Computer Science Magnet, beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. The lottery application window for GUSD Magnet programs has passed however there may still be spots available for this new magnet school. Interested families should complete an online application at www.gusdmagnetandflag.com. For more information, please contact Kristine Nam at (818) 241-3111 x1218.
