Public Hearing on Renaming Maryland Ave.

The City of Glendale's Planning Commission is holding a public hearing on the proposal to rename Maryland Avenue between Wilson and Harvard to Artsakh Drive. The hearing is taking place on Wednesday, May 16th at 5pm in the Municipal Services Building located at 633 E Broadway, room 105.

On February 2, 2018, a local community organization wrote Glendale City Council seeking consideration of changing the name of Sanchez Drive to Artsakh Drive. As a result, Council instructed staff to prepare and present a report describing the process for street renaming, analyzing the process as it relates to the request, and presenting options.

The report was presented at the March 13th City Council meeting. Of the seven options presented, Council made a motion on Option Two—to look further into renaming Maryland Ave.; no name changes have been approved as of yet.

Following the Council’s direction, City staff is now seeking community feedback on the proposed renaming. Neighborhood districts, businesses, residents, and other affected stakeholders are all encouraged to attend the May 16th meeting and comment on the proposal. The item will be brought to the Planning Commission seeking a recommendation. Following the Planning Commission’s recommendation, staff will prepare a report and present the option to the City Council for final consideration and a vote.
