Glendale, CA – At approximately 9:40 am, Glendale Fire Department units responded to reports of a carport fire at a three-story multi-unit townhome complex on 529 W. California Ave. The first in units reported heavy smoke showing and called for two additional engines to assist in battling the blaze. The fire originated in the carport where five cars were burned. The fire then began to extend to the floors and walls of the townhomes above the carport causing extensive damage to two of the units. Fortunately, all of the residents of the nine townhomes were able to evacuate safely. As firefighters were attacking the fire in the kitchen of a townhome, a gas leak from a damaged natural gas line was discovered, adding to the complexity and hazards of this incident. With assistance from the Burbank and Pasadena Fire Departments, a total of 10 fire companies, 1 ambulance, 1 Staff Captain and 2 Battalion Chiefs, knockdown was called at 11:15 am. Firefighters were able to confine the blaze to the complex without causing damage to neighboring buildings. Once the fire was extinguished, salvage and overhaul operations ensued. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Glendale Fire Department.
