High Wind and Red Flag Warnings Issued as Winds and Fire Rage in Southern California

High wind and red flag warnings were issued this morning, Tuesday, December 5, by the National Weather Service for the Los Angeles and Oxnard regions, an area that includes the City of Glendale.

The high wind warning advised residents to be aware of an “extended period of moderate to strong Santa Ana winds through at least Thursday with periods of damaging winds” and “periods of freeze and hard freeze through mid-week for wind protected areas.”

A red flag warning – meaning that critical fire weather conditions are expected – was issued moments after the high wind warning.

“This will likely be the strongest and longest duration Santa Ana wind event we have seen so far this season,” the red flag warning stated. “If fire ignition occurs, there will be the potential for very rapid fire spread, long range spotting, and extreme fire behavior.”

Wind gusts will be between 60 and 80 mph Tuesday morning, between 35 and 55 mph later this afternoon, and between 50 and 70 mph Wednesday night and Thursday.

“Winds this strong will be capable of producing downed trees and powerlines, blowing dust and debris, and power outages,” a special weather statement from the National Weather Service noted.

Glendale Fire Department has sent strike teams to assist current fires in Southern California.
