A woman believed to be in her 60’s was killed last night, the evening of August 30, when a car struck her while she was crossing in a crosswalk at the intersection of Porter and Colorado Streets.
The motorist, a teenage student driver, was accompanied by their parent in the passenger seat. [UPDATE, Sept. 1 @ 9:30 a.m.: The car was a 1994 Acura Integra. The car, driving westbound, struck the pedestrian at 6:45 p.m.]
Despite the City’s proactive campaigns to fully enforce traffic laws, educate the public, and engineer safer streets, this incident is the second fatality of its kind this year. The first occurred on August 2.

Among the City’s campaigns is Be Street Smart Glendale, a campaign to educate, encourage, and empower each person to take personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others when walking, driving, or biking in Glendale.
The campaign’s website, bestreetsmartglendale.com, features many educational resources such as the City’s pedestrian safety plan.
The website also outlines many ways residents can get involved with the campaign including the Billion Step Challenge and Pedestrian Safety Advisory Board, which was created by the Glendale City Council last year.
These efforts and others have resulted in a significant decrease in pedestrian fatalities over the past several years.
Glendale comes in well above average among similar-sized cities in several measures of transportation safety, according to 2014 data provided by the State of California Office of Traffic Safety, or OTS.
