Yasmin K. Beers Named City Manager of Glendale, California

At its regular meeting on February 20, 2018, the Glendale City Council appointed Yasmin K. Beers as Glendale City Manager, effective immediately.

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Beers was Glendale’s Assistant City Manager and had been serving as its Interim City Manager since November 2017. She began her career with the City of Glendale in 1987 as a part-time employee in the Library Department while attending high school and college. For the past 31 years, she has held various, progressively responsible positions. Ms. Beers was appointed Deputy City Manager in 2000 and, in 2010, she was appointed Assistant City Manager.

In her capacity as Assistant City Manager, Ms. Beers served as the City’s Chief Operating Officer overseeing approximately 1,600 employees serving in Police, Fire, Public Works, Parks, Library, and Glendale Water & Power Departments to name a few. She was also responsible for City-wide budget oversight, the Capital Improvement Program, labor and employee relations, policy management, and served as an administrative hearing officer for the City. Ms. Beers played a crucial role in the restructuring of the City organization necessitated by the Great Recession and subsequent elimination of the City’s Redevelopment Agency in 2012.

Yasmin was born in Tehran, Iran. At the age of eight, she moved with her family to Hollywood. In 1985, the Kamria family moved to Glendale where Yasmin attended and graduated from Hoover High School. Thereafter, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the California State University, Northridge and a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Woodbury University.

Yasmin is a past member of Soroptimist International of Glendale. She served as President in 1999/2000. She is also a past board member of the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. In 2011, the Glendale Chamber of Commerce recognized Yasmin as Woman of the Year; in 2013, she was the recipient of the Armenian American Woman of Excellence Award; in 2014, Yasmin was recognized by the Glendale Educational Foundation for her distinguished service and philanthropic efforts; in 2015, YWCA awarded Yasmin with the Heart & Excellence Award; and in 2017, she was recognized by Business Life magazine as a Women Achiever, each a tribute to her core values that represent her civic responsibilities, volunteerism, and community service.

“As Mayor, I could not be more proud to say we have identified the most qualified individual to lead our organization,” said Mayor Vartan Gharpetian. “Yasmin has been serving Glendale residents since 1987, and she is a consummate professional – with integrity and high moral and ethical values. It gives me great joy to announce on behalf of my fellow Councilmembers, that Ms. Beers becomes the first female City Manager in Glendale’s 112 year history."

Yasmin and her husband Dan have two children, Bijan, 12 and Sophia, 9 and reside in Glendale.

Beers succeeds Scott Ochoa, who joined the City of Ontario as its City Manager in November 2017.
