On Tuesday March 26, 2019, the Glendale City Council confirmed the City Manager’s appointment of Yazdan (Yaz) Emrani as the Director of Public Works. Mr. Emrani has 30 years of experience in a vast array of civil engineering and information technology projects in both the public and the private sectors.
He began his engineering career in 1986 as a Design Engineer for KCI Technologies. From there, Mr. Emrani worked in various engineering capacities which led to his position as Principal and Regional Vice President. From 1998 until 2001, he managed the Public Works Divisions for three large engineering and consulting firms. In 2001, he founded his own consulting firm where he grew the company to a staff of 20 within two years. He was responsible for developing managing, directing business, and growing all facets of engineering design and client relations within the Public Works divisions of cities, special districts, and other municipal agencies.
Emrani’s experience in government administration began in 2008 when he became the Director of Public Works for the County of Monterey. For three years, he was responsible for managing and directing a staff of 180 and 10 divisions.
From 2011 to 2017, Emrani served as the Senior Vice President for a large consulting firm and later on became the Southern California Infrastructure Practice Lead for another consulting firm in Southern California. Emrani returned to the public sector in January 2018 when he was appointed as the Director of Public Works/City Engineer for the City of San Fernando. There he was responsible for managing multiple divisions including Engineering Design, Road and Bridge Maintenance, Electrical, Construction, Transportation and Traffic Engineering, Water, Sewer, Stormwater Management, Facilities and Fleet.
“Yazdan’s extensive experience and leadership in both the public and private sectors provide the necessary skills to solve the unique challenges we face here in Glendale,” said City Manager Yasmin Beers.
Mayor Zareh Sinanyan stated, “The Glendale City Council is excited to confirm Yazdan Emrani’s appointment as the Director of Public Works. He will be an asset to the City of Glendale and we look forward to working with him to build on the many successes of our public works department.”
Yazdan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park. He has also served on the boards of various professional organizations. His most recent appointment was to the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

Mr. Emrani has been married to his wife, Bahareh, for 26 years. The couple has two adult children—a son and a daughter.
